About Frontline Formation
Frontline Formation is a personal reflection space. It’s where I think out loud about ministry, formation, and calling - particularly as I make the transition from fourteen years of frontline corps ministry into a new appointment at William Booth College.
I’m Rob Westwood-Payne - a Salvation Army officer and pastor. I’ve spent all of my ministry so far at corps in the West Midlands, and South of England, trying to help ordinary people follow Jesus in every part of their lives. In July 2026 I joined the team at William Booth College as Unit Head for Foundational Learning, working alongside colleagues who have been training officers for many years.
This blog is not a guide to officer training, and it doesn’t speak for William Booth College or The Salvation Army. It’s one officer working something out in public - trying to stay honest and reflective during a significant transition.
What I Write About
The themes I keep coming back to are these: what it means to be formed rather than just trained; the connection between the inner life and outer ministry; whole-life discipleship in the home, the workplace, and the neighbourhood; the particular pressures and privileges of Salvation Army officership; and what fourteen years of frontline corps ministry might - or might not - have to say to the world of officer formation.
I write as a practitioner, not an academic. I don’t always have answers. But I’ve found that the questions are usually where the most honest thinking begins.
Who Might Find This Useful
• Salvation Army officers trying to stay reflective in busy appointments
• Cadets in training wondering what it’s all preparing them for
• Those exploring a call to officership
• Anyone in Christian ministry who cares about formation as much as function
You’re welcome here whether or not you’re a Salvationist.
My Other Writing
I also produce daily Bible devotionals and weekly sermons over at Battle Drill Daily Devotional and Battle Ready Sermons on YouTube and Substack - practical, hope-filled Bible teaching for everyday life. That’s a different space with a broader audience. This one is quieter and more personal.
